Felt Food toys

I have a new craft obsession - felt food. It is so fast, so fun, so easy to make. I just sent a bag of "groceries" to my niece for her second birthday (a perfect compliment to her first kitchen from grandma). Most of these ideas are shamefully copied from the toys at Mahar Dry Goods (sorry). Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?

Pancakes, bacon, a fried egg and a strawberry

The insides of a bologna and cheese sandwich with lettuce and tomato

lunch - bologna and cheese with potato chips

Oreo cookies (these are crocheted)

pizza with pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers and black olives

cheese ravioli with marinara sauce

Chicken dinner - a drumstick, mashed potatoes, pea pods and a slice of pumpkin pie

another shot of the pumpkin pie - I added a dollop of whipped cream

The grocery sack - I sewed it out of those sheets of fun foam you can find at the craft store. Peeking out of the bag is the ravioli (I made a label out of full-sheet label paper and stuck it to a glad ware container) and a loaf of bread (which I forgot to photograph).

They should start a 12-step program for people like me. Hello, my name is Jill and I am addicted to making felt food.

Wow!! You are amazing! When I first started looking I thought there would be just a few things, but then I kept scrowling down and the felt food was never ending. This is the cutest idea for little girls. I will definitely keep these in mind for my niece when she gets older.

Okay, I'm not a big fan of the word "cute" but these are seriously CUTE!!!!!!! Well done! Am going to have to try some of the easy ones after my baby burping cloth binge is over....
You are way creative - even if you got the idea somewhere else, you figured out how to turn it into a reality! Kudos.

Hey Jill--Me again! I'm dreaming of making felt food for Isabella. We need to get her a toy kitchen and some toy food because she really into playing with a toaster oven (we never use) and stale pieces of bread. Pretty pathetic, huh?! I refuse to buy those gross plastic pieces of food. So, if you have any tips on the how to make the food let me know.

Hi Jill!

Your felt food is great! I love looking at what other people come up with so I can get my own ideas.

Yeah I sew it too (and yes I'm totally addicted).

I've noticed people asking for tips and stuff on how to do this and I thought I'd share one.

I wanted to figure out how to make a pattern for a felt tomato so it would be round and look like an actual tomato.
I found that if you cut six petal shapes (think in between a longish oval and diamond) you can sew 5 1/2 of the sides together so the seams don't show and then after stuffing it just whip stitch the remaining 1/2 of the last seam. for the leaf on top, I just cut a small circle out of green felt and then cut little triangles around the edge of that and sew it on the top.

You can see my finished product here:

Did you make these without a pattern or directions? Just by looking at other people's picture of what you wanted it to look like?

Julie said...

I'd like to make some of these for a church function I've been asked to help with. Could you email me at hoolianna55 (at) hotmail (dot) com? You'll get credit for the idea and I can even reference your blog, if you like.
