sockfest '08

We had an all-sock animal Saturday this weekend. I made a giraffe, Meg made a dog and a zebra, Kathryn made a monkey and Mitzi made a rat. Good times had by all.

I'm new to your site (love it!) and I think the sock animals are adorable. Do you have a tutorial/pattern on your site somewhere that I could look at?

Thanks Mel! We LOVE the rat - it's tail is especially sick.

Melanie - the dog, monkey and zebra came from a book called Sock and Glove (an amazing book!), which has patterns for about a dozen cute animals. The giraffe came out of my own head, and Mitzi was the creator of the rat. Although, I must say the group of animals was a collaborative effort.

Your blog is fantastic - so creative and inspirational! Can you show us how to make those animals?

So I just happened to be browsing and your blog was one of note on the blogger page. I am now addicted to crafts because of you! I just got a new sewing machine and have no idea what I'm doing but feel like I actually can do something with your projects! I actually know Kathyrn in this picture....she was my roommate's (Sereneti) friend from BYU-I. Kind of cool! I love your stuff, thanks!

Your stuff is adorable. I was wondering if you have ever heard of the website Etsy.com and if not you should be very interested in looking at it. It's a craft website like none other.

I love these. Do you have a titorial or did you buy a book that showed you how to do those! And if so...where did you find/have it :)

Meg said...

We are just so darn talented! I am in love with all of these animals (esp my zebra!). The addiction continues, however, as I have been googling places to find new fun socks.

I love, love, LOVE the giraffe. I think I'm going to have to get you to teach me how to make one of those for Elliot...

my daughter adores stuffed animals...are these harder than the baby shoes??? I have an idea! What about rating your projects, like 1 star for easy, 5 stars for difficult so I can steer clear of anything over a 1... *L*

I noticed in one of your other posts you mentioned you work fulltime. You must be EXTREMELY organized to do that, all your craft projects and write about them too. Do you ever sleep?! I've added your blog to the "crafts" folder in my favorites and hope to reference it soon for the cloth baby shoes. Thanks for some great stuff!

Hey-- I hit the random button and it sent me to your blog. I thought these were a pretty good hobby. I was wondering if you ever thought of getting your friends to make those and give them to little kids in shelters or something like that? I think they would be a pretty cheap way too make some kids happy. Just a thought.

I just randomly dropped by your blog and I can't get enough of that giraffe. I'm having an alphabet/animal nursery for my baby girl due in June, it would go perfectly. Do you have directions for how to make it. It would be so cute to put on her shelf! I'm pretty crafty, but never made a sock animal before, even a little direction would help. thanks,

I love making sock monkeys, I think yours are really cute too. If you all have time to check mine out that would be so cool. I have a great story about a bride to be that ordered 70 sock monkeys from me to give away to her guest, You keep up the good work with all your fun things you are making. here is my blog.

Well it's nice to know that I am not the only one that just found your blog randomly and fell into obsession. I made the coffee filter roses and they rocked. I also can't wait to try out the diaper cake for my sister's shower as well as all the awesome ideas you have. If we keep asking for the tutorial on the sock animals, do you think we will get one?

Bekka said...

Wait is there an animal tutorial yet? I stubled on to your blog...love it!

Because of your posts, I rushed out and bought the Sock and Glove book. I've just finished my first dog this week. I wanted to let you know that Jack's 99 Cent Store (110 W. 32nd) has some great striped knee socks that are perfect for these projects, and only 99 cents.

Jill said...

flax hill gardener - thanks for the tip! I am always on the lookout for great socks (seriously, I look for socks wherever I go!). We have found that Gap's socks work extraordinarily well for these sock animals. They are nice and thick, so batting doesn't show through when you stuff them (but wait till they go on sale!).

To everyone else - thanks a million for all the nice comments. We sure had a lot of fun making these. I am considering making a giraffe tutorial (but this is not a promise). :) Most of all, I encourage you to buy the book Sock and Glove. It will teach you all the basics. Once you are familiar with the basic design, it is easy to modify into other animals!
