prepare to meet my inner nerd

Today is my sweetie's 29th birthday, so I made him this super-special Cylon Raider cake. Jared, if it weren't for you, I may still be playing sports - not making crafts and watching Battlestar Galactica. (Have I rubbed off on you at all?)

Happy birthday. :)

It was my first attempt at fondant, and I used sparkly powder stuff without the proper tools (like the airbrush it requires). All I can say is, FUN! I need to be adventurous with my cakes more often.

This cake has a delicious raspberry filling (a Raider wouldn't be a Raider without the guts), and I want to eat it by the spoonful. Here's the recipe.

Raspberry Sauce

1 10oz. package frozen raspberries, thawed
1 Tablespoon cornstarch
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/4 cup sugar

Puree raspberries and strain through a fine sieve to remove the seeds. In a saucepan, combine all ingredients and bring to a boil over medium heat. Done! Let cool completely if using as a cake filling.

Update: He liked it!

I've never even heard of galactica whatevera but you are a #1 wife to make a cake like that for your hubby! My attempt was sad, since I frosted it before the cake was cooled and it ended up sliding apart... it was like plate techtonics in action. Maybe next year I will try to be creative.

That is awesome!!! My hubby got me addicted to the show and as soon as a saw your cake I knew what it was without reading - so A++!!! Now I need to make sure that he doesn't see what you did otherwise it might be hinted at for me to do, and well, I'm just not there in decorating yet - maybe some years though.

sweet! I'll have to use that idea thought process and come up with something from one of our fave tv shows, too. Battlestar, Psych, Chuck, or Burn Notice. Thanks for the idea! I'm sure Jared will LOVE it!

Oh no! If Kevin sees this cake, he'll want one for his birthday in April. Way to go, Jill! Way to steal the "Most Awesome Wife In The World" award from me. Darn you! Hmmm...I wonder if I can make a hatch from Lost...

Hmmmm now you have me thinking that I need to try something adventurous for my DH's upcoming birthday... he would love a Battlestar Gallactica cake especially as I tease him for watching that show...

Dude - you rock. It turned out fabulously. I am beyond anxious to sample it this evening. While most commenters were taken by the awesome shape of the cake, I was more intrigued by the idea of tasty raspberry filling. Booya for birthdays.

Sweetie, this is the most awesome cake I've ever seen. It's even better than the "One cake that's really three cakes" I made you when we lived in Provo. I can't wait to come home.

I don't care what people say or how much fun they make of me....I love Battlestar it is seriously the best show out there and I am so sad that we only have 4 more episodes left and then it is over, gone forever!!! One of my friends calls it "drama in space", such a great saying about the show. Well I hope you watch it as well. I made fun of my husband when he started watching the mini series, but then I got hooked once he started watching it, and have been ever since! Great job on the cake and I am sure your husband loved it. Stupid Ellen, I can't believe she is the head cylon!

I have been wanting to try out fondant but don't know where to start - do you have a good recipe or any advice?

Angie said...

That looks like something my hubby would like :)

Jill said...

Thanks, everybody! To be clear and honest, I am a Battlestar SUPER fan, so I liked the cake as much as Jared. He was the one to get me hooked though. :)

Whitney - I don't have a recipe for the fondant. I bought mine at a baking supply store. Good luck with it - I think fondant is a lot of fun! I found some good instructional videos on how to roll it out on YouTube.

There is an excellent homemade marshmellow fondant recipe on the Wilton discussion boards. I have made it many times and it tastes 100 times better than the store bought stuff. Here's the link:
