Itty Bitty Dress

Here's a project that has been on my to-do list for over two years:

The Itty Bitty Dress!  It is a free pattern from Made by Rae, and as soon as I saw this fabric I knew I wanted to use it for a little dress.

I increased the pattern size a little, so this will probably fit baby girl around 3-6 months.  It was so fast and easy though, I think I'll have to make the newborn size as well (maybe for her first Sunday debut?).

Isn't it sweet?

Jared came home from work and said, "Hey, that actually looks good!"  Whatever that is supposed to mean.  :)  He was really pleased that I used the new serger on it.

By the way, I think I have a favorite new fabric designer.  After a big fabric shopping trip last week I was looking through my bounty and noticed that every last yard of fabric I bought (even the flannel) was a Riley Blake design.  This particular print is part of the Summer Song collection, and I LOVE the Wheels collection for boys.

Also, I think that Made by Rae's patterns are kind of fabulous, and you should check them out.  I can't wait to try out the Baby Tights, and am going to buy the Toddler Backpack pattern to make a sweet bag for Oscar.

I actually just created something out of some of that "Summer Song" collection by Riley Blake.. it was soo much fun! It's under my etsy shop. It's the "On The Go" Drawing station-tweet tweet small. I've also been using the Rainy Days, and a bunch of others... some of my favorite fabric, and I can get it sooooo easily over here in korea!

I do love the fabric.
I have that print on scrapbooking paper, and I haven't seen it at any of our local stores on fabric.
I'm officially on the hunt though.

Congrats on the new serger. Lucky! ;)

The dress looks so good!

I love that pattern; made a few for my baby when she was tiny. Yours is beautiful!! Such a nice fabric, and the trim and lining compliment it so well.

I have made several of this dress. There is an enlargement pattern available. I have it in my email and don't remember where I got it from though but could send it to you.
The enlargement is for a size 2t but I added some ribbon to tie it up in the back so it fit my daughter from 12 months and still fits her and she is 2 years old now.
It's a really versatile pattern.

Great job - love the piping in the waist-line. Yes, I don't have any boys, but I have been using the "wheels" fabric on gifts for my daughters little friends - SO cute!!

Jill - question - is the serger easy to thread and use? I bought a used one off of Craigslist and it was really old (10 years or more) and it had no directions and i couldn't figure out how to sew with it, let alone thread it, so i resold it. I feel as if it has scarred me from sergers...i really want one though. Does it make sewing easier?? Thanks :)

Agree, agree, agree and agree. I love the dress, think Rae is awesome, and love Riley Blake...her winter flannels are so stinking cute.

Enjoy sewing for the new little miss.

Hi there, can I ask you a question? I was reading through the instructions to make this dress and I notice there is no opening in the back. Is it easy to put it on and take it off for a baby? Thanks!!

Jill said...

Thanks, everyone!

Carrie - the Brother serger I got is VERY user friendly. It comes with an instruction booklet and cd-rom. Plus, it comes pre-threaded with color coded thread to match the machine parts, so it is easy to tell what goes where. I was able to successfully thread it from scratch on my second try.

Ana - I haven't tried the dress on a baby because mine is still in the womb. :) But from what I read on Rae's blog, it is easiest to pull the dress up over the legs (rather than over the head) and then tie at the shoulders.

ANA, it is really easy to put on because it ties up at the shoulders.

I have been looking for inspiration to finish mines! I wanna to make a zillion they are just too cute!! How did you enlarge the pattern? With a copier or by hand? I need to make one for my 8month old because I have the bigger size pattern for 3t-4t for my older daughter but I got a feeling it will be big..so that one I have to down size. I got an older model serger from craiglists but have yet to use it..=/ it seems scary to me lol plus I got to replace the blade..
I love everything you make! oh I made the playdough the other day & i love it! super easy to make!
