Prairie Dress (an Itty Bitty variation)

I made another Itty Bitty Dress in the newborn size last night, switching things up a bit.  I changed the straps to button instead of tie, and added a tie-back ribbon waist and some cute hand appliqued pockets.

The final result looks borderline "Little House on the Prairie" to me, which typically isn't my style, but I like that there is not a stitch of pink on the whole dress.

Now that I'm looking at these photos, I think the polka dot ribbon is a bit too much ... it would have looked better with a plain cream ribbon.  Alas, I did not have any plain cream ribbon last night and I am not one who can leave a project unfinished and just go to bed.  :)  I should learn to have more patience!

My very favorite detail is the pockets.  I ironed Wonder Under to a piece of the fabric print and cut out a few of the flowers.  Then I appliqued the flowers to the pockets by hand using a blanket stitch.

The fabric is called "Maggie's Dress" and comes from American Jane's discontinued Recess collection.

I don't like too much fuss in clothing, but the polka dot ribbon is not overdone. It looks tasteful and I love it.

I can't believe you can just whip this up in one night! Amazing :) Can I make one suggestion, though? (I hope I don't sound annoying or rude), but I think it would be better to put the buttons on the front strap and the button hole on the strap that comes over the shoulder to the front. It would hang better and you wouldn't get the excess flap in the back. Does that make sense? You could also put in another buttonhole to make it a little more adjustable. What's nice about having a girl is when the dress becomes to short - it can then be turned into a shirt!

Seriously adorable, though. You are so talented!

STINKIN ADORABLE...and no, not in the it's cutesy-schmutesy sort of way. I think the polka dot band makes it whimsical...it actually takes away from the potential LHOTP look (from the fabric and pockets)

Great job!!!

You'll be surprised how quick the "pink obsession" will overpower you.

I immediately printed out the pattern after reading your post yesterday. I can't wait and barely resisted starting it last night. But, until she has somewhere to sleep, I really need to mix cleaning in around the sewing.

I too like the polka dot ribbon! It justs brings all of the elements together nicely. I also love that there is no pink in the dress, also. As beautiful as pink is for girls, it is nice to see something different!

Before I read your sentence about the ribbon, I was going to comment that the polka dot ribbon was my favorite part. :) :) :)

Such a sweet dress.

Adorable! I love the polka dot ribbon too, but I like more of the funky Matilda Jane look for my daughters clothes.

I LOVE the polka dot ribbon, and the no pink! I'm not a "pink" gal myself. I also like the idea someone else had about bloomers underneath....maybe polka dot ones?

I like the polka dot ribbon! This is a dress I made for my daughter last year, and I modified the straps from the ties to snaps..you can't see it super well in this pic, but..I LOVE this dress and can't bear to get rid of it! http://www.flickr.com/photos/95188486@N00/3291461248/

Beautiful!

Having made this dress for my own daughter when she was born. I need to tell you that it's little and there is a chance your babe won't wear it for long. I didn't realize how fast my babies grew. It only fit for 2-3 weeks. But oh she was cute wearing it for the few short weeks it fit.

Congrats on the upcoming baby.

So cute - I like the change you made to buttons on the straps. A very cute idea.

You little dresses make me sad that my daughter is almost three now and that I didn't have my new sewing machine when she was still teeny tiny!

Can't wait to see what you sew next!

So is the ribbon instead of the piping, or in addition to? I had such a hard time with the piping on this dress when I made one, I'd love an alternative!
