What's this, you say? Something not baby-related?!!! How refreshing.
I'm going to a bridal shower this week and wanted to add something handmade to the not-so-exciting cake pan from the bride's registry.
This simple hostess apron should do the trick. The shape has kind of a retro-vibe, but the print is bright and modern. It is similar to the hostess aprons I have made in the past, except it isn't gathered, has a rounded bottom, and there is a very long sash at the waist that wraps around the back and ties up front. It's kind of sassy. I just made it up as I went along yesterday afternoon, so maybe I'll post a pattern for it someday. But not today. :)
I'm also including the recipe for my favorite chocolate cake (my sister's recipe) that uses said cake pan, and some blank recipe cards to match. I made these using my favorite photo-editing site, picnik.com.
Here's the yummy cake recipe, if you're interested:
And some blank recipe cards, if you like them:
Just right click to save the file and print as a 4x6 image. You should be able to fit two per page.

What a lovely gift. I love the recipe cards you made. :)
I am in love with that fabric. One of these days I need to get around to ordering a yard!
Love the apron, and those recipe cards are so pretty! Did you use the free version of picnik, or do you have the premium?
I´d love to have the pattern and sew one for myself and all the stylish homegirls in my family. Perhaps in fall, so we can do some for christmas! And once more the best to Ruby....
OMGosh! I just made a very similar gift for a bridal shower too! It was an "Around the Clock" party and I received 11AM. So, I went with a brunch theme...Apron, matching napkin rings, matching kitchen towels, brunch recipes, a bottle of champagne & champagne glasses. I loved the idea so much, I think I'll be making more in the future...even if I don't get an 11AM "Around the Clock" invitation. I just love making gifts that are not on the registry! : )
I recently made a hen party package for my friend, I posted about it here: http://bygillian.blogspot.com/2010/05/hen-party-gifts.html
I recently splurged and got the premium version of picnik, and it is worth every penny. I love it!
But even using the free features only, you can really make a difference in your photos and make fun paper goods like gift tags, party decorations, or these recipe cards.
What a great gift! I love the fabric you chose! Those photo editing pics turned out great!
I love that you coordinated the recipe cards with the apron. It's all about the details. The apron looks great and I love the extra long sash.
I love the fabric! What is it?

That is my favorite chocolate cake too :) except I make it with almost no fat (less calories) so I can eat more- ha ha
Cute recipe cards! Good luck with the little one!
very cute apron and what a great idea! I would love a hostess gift like that! I keep meaning to sew some aprons for myself but I just cant find a pattern
Hey Jill. I haven't checked one of my favorite craft blogs in forever and can't believe that you are days away from baby Ruby (LOVE LOVE LOVE the name!). Blessings to you and I can't wait to see what you will continue to crank out even with a newborn...leaving me with no excuses whatsoever :)
What a great gift!! Very cute apron.
I really like this apron and combination of gifts. She is very lucky for you to do this for her.
Also, thank you for sharing your fav photo-editing site.
I really like this apron idea! I have a cute apron I made at an enrichment activity but it has a full bib. I can't wait to use up some of the super cute fabric I've been hiding away just for an occasion like this!
We've been making that cake in our family for YEARS and it is the BEST!!! What a great gift to share with a friend.
This recipe is making me laugh! My family and I use the same recipe (but we use yellow cake instead of devil's food). It didn't have a name so my sister and I named it "THE Cake"!
Can you explain how you made the recipe card in picnik? would love to know. I couldn't figure it out!
I like very mutch the apron !!!those The recipe cards are pretty!
i LOVE the apron. And the cards! It's definitely going to outshine the requested registry gift!
Can I be a total pain? How did you make the cards on picnik? I have something I want to make, but all I could figure out how to do on their site is edit photos. I don't want to edit a photo. What am I missing. If I am asking too much, I understand. crbozich@hotmail.com
What a great gift! And those cards are gorgeous- I love the colors! Thanks so much, I'll be linking.
Please oh, Please give info on how to make the apron! I love it but am not able to make with out a patern.
love the recipe card template. After adding the recipe to the card, the 4 x 6 inch size is perfect to save onto a memory stick and take to a photo printing machine for a very impressive card.
Many thanks for the template. It's so classy.
Cute recipe cards! I like the color scheme.
I stopped by to check out your recipe cards and am so glad I did. I just showed my sister the same fabric you used earlier today because I want to use it in my bedroom. Thanks for the peek and for sharing!
What flourish did you use?
Thank you so much for posting this! My husband is going to be in his best friend's wedding soon and I am needing an inexpensive gift. I was planning on buying a baking pan or bowl and filling it with wooden spoons, homemade pot holders, an apron, a gourmet mix and recipes. This is the perfect recipe card template. I've joined picnik and I'm trying it out. I love it. I've always liked how crisp and clean your stuff is. Thanks for showing me how you accomplish that. Congrats on your darling daughter. May God bless your family abundantly.
Awesome! that was a great bridal shower gift. Keep posting guys!
