embossed blog cards

So, a couple of weeks ago I won a really fun giveaway at 30 Days - a custom hand-lettered stamp by the Letter Girl!   Since I am a renter, I decided to have a stamp made of my blog address instead of my mailing address.

It came today:

How fun is that?

As soon as the babies fell asleep, I dusted off my old stamp supplies and made some blog cards.

Have you ever done embossing with a heat tool and powder?  I hadn't done it since I was in high school, but I happened to have all the stuff in my craft stash.  The tool looks like this:

And then you also need a stamp pad, embossing powder, and the stamp of your choice.

You stamp your paper, and quickly pour the powder over the design before the ink dries.

Then dust off the excess powder ...

And use the heat tool to melt the remaining powder.

The resulting design has a nice raised effect, and if you use a metallic powder, kind of shimmery.

My favorite card was made using purple ink and a translucent powder - the gold was a little too blingy for me (especially on that crazy paper).  Nice and simple.

To be honest ... I don't have much use for blog cards.  Occasionally someone finds out I blog and wants the address, so it will be handy to have a few of these stashed in my wallet.  But it is not that frequent of an occurance.

So my question for you is ... what ELSE can I do with my fantastic new stamp?  :)

Do you have an etsy store? You could include blog cards in any orders you ship.

Love that stamp!

And I don't have an embossing gun but I've eyed one for quite some time. Makes me really want one now. a

they look great! i was going to suggest the same that christina did - put them with anything you might sell. i've never done any embossing, but my friend did in high school, and i seem to remember her using a toaster as her heat source. probably not as safe as your fun tool :)

I use a stamp and a fabric marker to make tags for things I make. Usually I stamp right onto a loop of ribbon and then I stitch it into a seam. Works perfectly!

i was going to suggest the same as gillian. my mom has a sewing business and uses satin ribbon and stamps her personal stamp on the ribbon before sewing it into clothing. :)

If you make cards put them on the back like a label (ex. hallmark).

I love heat embossing! There is some wonderful satisfaction in watching the transformation when the heat hits the powder and it starts to shimmer!

how about using it in gifts, with a small note on the back. like a to/from tag....thats my idea and lettergirl is pretty clever!

I think I'm like the tenth person to say this, but it would be so handy for if/when you make things to sell! I also like the idea to use it as a tag on handmade gifts. :) It looks awesome! And-haha-yes, it totally took me back to my days in young womens. :)

Wow that's awesome!!

Like others have said, you could use it on the back of gift-tags or 'explanation tags' on jars of preserves etc.

Alternatively, you could simply use it to ID your stuff - stamp it in books etc in case you lend them to people...

I'm jealous, I love stamping! xx

Could you use permanant ink to make labels for your sewn clothing?

I love these stamps! I saw them on another blog and I have being meaning to purchase one for myself! Your stamp is so cute!

I agree that you should have a few to hand out, but I would suggest putting them in projects you give or sell. On a more fun note, have your readers do a "where has homemade by jill taken me" contest and readers post pictures of projects or ways that you have inspired them and they have to have your car in the photo!

Like many others, I was thinking you could stamp products that you make and use it as a logo. Maybe this will inspire you towards your goal of selling items on etsy! (I've been following this blog for a little while.) :)

You can also use you toaster to emboss! (Learned that at a stamp party a LONG time ago!) Turn it on and hover the card over the top!

This is a beyond amazing idea! I totally want to do this for my etsy store now!

Oh I love stamps! Along with using it for tags you could use it to make bookmarks for all your favorite sewing books to keep your next project marked, you could use it on fabric to mark your projects, you could use it on the back of invites for the parties you put on (i.e. baby showers), or you could use it to mark boxes on items you make as presents. Keep us updated on your stamping projects!

Very cool! I like the embossed look a lot, and I think you could add a nice little card to any gifts you give, especially at Christmas. You could hand write, "Handmade by" and then put the stamp underneath . . . just an idea!

Make cards and stamp the back with your stamp. That way, you are advertising, AND making cute personalized cards.

When I make homemade cards for people I put my stamp on the back so people don't have to ask if it's homemade or not. Plus it's like a cool little signature.

I like your stamp. I have the same embossing heat tool. I have kids 23 months and 3 months old and the other day I embossed their hand and foot prints! They turned out really well and will be nice reminders since they're already getting big so fast :)

I use my stamp for business cards and to stamp on twill tape as a label for my sewn things.
nice and easy. I also stamp it on the bottom of the dowel that I use for my wands. And on the paper bags I use to put people's purchases in at craft fairs.

Jenna said...

I would stamp it everywhere ... on the backs of envelopes (personal mail AND bills!). It's a great way to get the word out about your blog!

Awesome idea and so fun and whimsical, I love the idea to use as stamp to give your cards a handmade touch and make them tactile. You may not have had much use for cards before, but I think you should paper your neighborhood with them now. Those are so stinkin' cute! I have the same embossing tool too☺

You've given me such awesome ideas with your cool post! What about making some personal stationary with your new stamp?

NicoleV said...

If you want to use it for more than just advertising about your blog - you could ink the design only (just put tape over the words) and then hand write a message on the inside (thanks, welcome to the neighborhood, congrats...etc)
If you emboss the design it will be like a little frame for your message.
Love a new stamp!

Oh my gosh- those are the prettiest cards ever! I love both versions. I'll be linking. Hmmm... I think I would use the same embossing technique to stamp a metal bracelet or hair barrette. It would be fun to turn your blog name into an accessory!

Hi there

I like your idea of embossing. I am from India and emboss painting is one of the art work there where they actually emboss metal in an artistic form and frame it. I was thinking may be we can use your idea of embossing for this. Correct me if I am wrong:

My idea is that we can draw a painting or soem art design on a paper with pencil and apply some glue on the design and then put the powder, dust off and use embossing tool on top of it. This can give the design you wanted in an embossed form and them we can frame it and show off as a wall decor.

Maybe someday you could find a way to include it in your blog title for decoration if you ever decided to change up your header. Not that I don't like what it is now. I just now stumped upon your blog and love ALL of your blog but there are many people out there that frequently change up the appearance of their headers. Thanks for the tips :)
