This project was truly a labor of love. It took over 50 hours to complete, and at least 10 years off my life. But ... the final product was worth it. Hopefully Oscar and siblings will play with this for years to come, and someday he will appreciate the effort that went into it.
The playmat measures about 3x4 feet, and is almost entirely appliqued. The road is painted with black acrylic paint, and then sewn around the edges to give it a crisp look and to make it more cohesive with the rest of the playmat.
I designed all of the buildings myself, except of course for the gas station and car wash, which I copied from the Fiskar's Car Activity Mat (they were too cute to resist). For the gas pump hose, I substituted the shoelace with a elastic hairband. The car wash strips are leather trim.
The playmat includes all of our favorite places around town, like Grandma and Grandpa's house, complete with their fruit trees:
Chicken Little, our local toy store:
The courthouse, which also double's as daddy's work:
Crushcakes Cupcakery and Trader Joe's:
In-N-Out burger:
and a school with the ever-important playground:
Other buildings include the train station, fire department, additional houses, our church, and of course we couldn't leave off the beach. We also have traffic signs, cross walks, parking spaces and a post box.
Some of the buildings, like the courthouse and In-N-Out, look true to life. I took liberties with others, like Crushcakes and all of the houses, to make them more festive. If I made this mat look just like Santa Barbara, almost every building would be stucco with a red tile roof.
The playmat is backed with Riley Blake White Map from the Wheels collection.
All in all, a very satisfying project and a very happy birthday boy!

Oh yea!! This was the project I was hoping it would be! Ever since you posted photos of the play mat that was yours when you were a child, I hava similar quilt (to double as a play mat) one for my son. You are WAY further than I got though...mine is still mostly in the sketch phase (but at least they are all finished! and I, too had planned on appliqueing the majority. Thank you so much for posting photos (and an honest time line so I know what I'm in for and not to get discouraged when I realize I had bit off more than I realized). I am officially re-inspired! His birthday is Christmas Eve, so we'll see if I make my deadline!
This is gorgeous and inspiring! Oscar and Ruby are so blessed to have you as their momma.
Goodness! Such a wonderful job.
absolultey amazing! i love all the little details -and the tj's awning is so cute!

All the other comments are spot on...I just had to add my own "wow". I'm amazed at the detail. It is definitely an heirloom!

Your talent amazes us all. Great job. Thanks for the inspiration.

Whoa! That is by far the most ambitious project that I have ever seen! What an incredible pay off to such a big undertaking! You kids will love it and as they get older they will love that you made it! It will be something that can be passed down from generation to generation.
This is so amazing. Oscar & Ruby are lucky to have you for a mommy. You did such a great job, and I'm sure one day you will be appreciated for all the beautiful details you included. This will make a great family heirloom for your children... a wonderful gift.
Holy smokes! That is awsomely beautiful!
That is incredible!
This is so amazing! What an amazing and very special birthday gift for your son! I love how you included all of your favorite places. What a cool item for your son to be able to share with his children when he grows up. My kids would love something like this. My son is 8, and he still loves playing with cars.
I know this has already been said, but I have to say it, too--rick rack as Spanish tile is genius. Makes me want to do a wall-hanging of the California missions. The whole thing is gorgeous. :)
What an incredible "gift" to your son! I am in awe! It's so amazing! I love the thoughtful details such as your local shops & Grandmas!!

I LOVE it! I remember your saying you were making one a while back and it also sparked the idea at our house. Then I found one for $14 at IKEA and changed my mind. But this. This is amazing. WAY way better than the cheap IKEA mat. A piece of family history.
Absolutely amazing! Wonder if my little girl would want one of these? Makes me want a boy...
Can you be my mommy too? Holy smoke that mat is amazing! I could get lost playing on it for hours. Can I come over?
You are amazing! I can tell so much time went into this. What a lucky little boy he is. :)
Holy wow! That is so awesome. You are such an amazing woman/mom! Too cool. He will love that forever!
ADORABLE!!!! :) So cute! My brother and I had one of these when we were little, but not handmade with love! Truly a gift. How long did this take you?!
I told my sister in law I would make one of these for my nephew for christmas. I needed some inspiration though.... Now I have it :) Thanks!
That is SO GREAT! You are very talented.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO awesome. Great job.
wow....this is amazing!
That is SO cute! way to go!
Oh My Gosh!!!! Amazing, and super cute! WOW!!!
Wow! The detail on it is amazing! The whole thing is so adorable.
Did you use fusible webbing on ALL those tiny little pieces?? And where did you find the little yield and stop signs? This is amazing!
amazing...but that really isn't the right word...outstanding? no, that doesn't quite do it either! fantastic!
this is the most amazing homemade thing i've ever seen! i hope that your kids log at least as many hours playing on it as you did making it. i can see it being passed down to your future grandchildren!
You have really outdone yourself this time!
The courthouse and Traders, ahhhh how I miss them:(
This is an heirloom.
Wow, that is a labor of love. When I made mine I just used markers on a white sheet. I'm sure Oscar loves it and will use it for years to come. Beautiful work!!!
Oh wow, that is truly amazing! Stunning!
(Just a quick word of advice; somewhere on that beautiful piece of work put your phone number or address, just on the horrible off-chance it gets misplaced or lost. Had that happen to me . . .)
Love it. Now I just need to convince the husband to let me start one now so that when my boy turns two in a year I will be ready.
This is INCREDIBLE!!! You did an amazing job. This will be a treasure for him to save when he grows out of playing with it.
This is amazing! If I ever have a little boy, I plan on doing something like this. I'm sure it will be treasured for years!
Just beautiful!! Truely a family heirloom.
Well done.
You should be one proud mama and artist!

You're a genius! Well-deserved of the 100+ comments Jill! :)
That is incredibly amazing! A true work of art and family heirloom. (Having grown up in Carpinteria, I especially love the true-to-life courthouse!) Oscar is one blessed little boy.
I TOTALLY understand what you mean by a labor of love! I made one of these for my nephews a few years back. However, Mine was not quite as awesome as yours! My great grandma made one for my older brothers when they were little. They loved it, and it was passed down from kid to kid. We all loved it.
When I made the garages for the little houses, I made a little pocket that the cars can drive into. I am now having a baby boy, and I can't wait for one day when I can make one for him! ;)
Absolutely awesome! That has to be the best playmat I've ever seen!
You did an amazing job! It looks so wonderful.

Jill it is stupendous! I love it!
AMAZING. Amazing, that as a mother of two children (and one infant), you are still able to create such wonderful things.
Jill, that is fantastic! I love all the detail in the sweet mat. And look how cute Oscar is at the end "vrooming" his cars around. What a treasure.
Oh my goodness! Amazing! I love the little details like IN-n-Out!
As a new grandma, I have been following your blog for the past six months and have enjoyed making your burp clothes, apple dolls, etc for my two new grandbabies, Margaret Jayne and Felix. But the play cloth is superb-. Bravo!!
I may start for my grandbabies and hope to complete before they are two years old! thanks, Barbara

This is sooo gorgeous!! I have been thinking about making something similar for my girls but I think I'm a bit scared off now lol... You've just done such and amazing job!!!
This is AMAZING!! Great job!!
I've enjoyed looking at all of your crafts over the past couple of years and wished I could have HALF of your motivation and creativity. But THIS tops all of them!! What a MAGNIFICENT job you did on this play mat!!! I'm blown away. WOW!
Happy (second) Birthday to Oscar as well!!!
OK. That is ridiculously cute. What a fun idea! I love all of the attention to detail. My little boy would go nuts over something like this.
AMAZING! What a good mom you are... great job!
That is the cutest thing ever. I am so impressed with your dedication. You kids are going to fight over that when they are older and have their own kids.
Amazing
That really is a fabulous car mat! I can tell that you made it with such love (and patience!).
absolutely incredible!!!!!!!
This is an awesome car mat it's funny 2 weeks ago I decided I was going to make one for my son for Christmas and started buying stuff then a freind of mine told me about yours it's great. 1 question how did you hold the two pieces of fabric together did you just tie them in a couple spots??? did you quilt through a couple buildings??? That wouls help me out alot I'm going to applique mine also so I was thinking on how to keep the 2 fabrics together.
Just wanted to let you know that I featured your post on my blog: http://mummycrafts.blogspot.com/2010/10/most-amazing-car-mat-ever.html
Debbie -
I appliqued all the buildings only to the top layer of fabric. Then I added the backing and top stitched on a few of the roads (but not all of them).
Hope that helps!
Yes that does help very much, thank you I'm glad you made one of these it helps me figure out the idea I had in my head, and it helped me to visualize my buildings better. You do such great, cute stuff!
This is seriously amazing! What a dedicated project. Very beautiful.
It's wonderfull! You are a genius!
i've been wanting to make one of these for my son, but all the ones i'd seen were, well... kind of lame :)
but this is amazing!!! it's very inspiring to see what's possible! and thanks for including how long it took you to complete.. at least i'll have a reasonable expectation instead of thinking i could just throw something together for him at the drop of a hat and still have it look awesome :)
The playmat is just gorgeous. It looks amazing!
Oh my gosh, that is the cutest thing I've ever seen! I wish I were cute like you!! I just have to buy my kids stuff like that...but thanks for the inspiration! And happy birthday to your little guy!
There honestly are no words to describe this!! But amazing, awesome and absolutely PERFECT come to mind!
Oscar is one lucky man to have such an amazingly talented (and obviously patient mom!)
It'FANTASTIC!!!
Wonderful work!...and lots of love for your son.
Giulia
What a wonderful gift! You're design is just amazing.
I love it! I had one of these growing up, endless hours of fun!
I can't even begin to tell you how much I love this!. I'm going on maternity leave soon and it be awesome if I could the time in there to (slowly) piece one of these together for my 2 year old.
he currently prefers to 'drive' his cars on the wall - so every little bit helps :)
love love love it!
but i must admit, the in-and-out is my favorite part!!! YUM!
WOW. This is outstanding, I am truly inspired :) What a luck little boy Oscar is.
that is incredibly impressive & so creative! the cupcake shop & in-and-out are making me hungry! :)
ok another question, did you use any batting or anything between fabrics???
No, I didn't use any batting. I figured the cars would roll on it better if it wasn't too cushy.
Wow! I LOVE it. My son is just 7 months old, but maybe if I start working on it now, it will be ready in time for his second birthday! :)
That is absolutely beautiful!
This is amazing - well done:)
Hi Jill, I love your playmat! I have been wanting to make one of these, now I'm really inspired. Random question for you, do you have any scraps left from this project that you would be willing to sell? It seems the hardest part is going to be gathering enough fabrics that will look good on the mat. Just thought I would ask. Thanks, Jenn
Jenn, I am currently making one of these and for my little buildings and stuff I just bought some of the "fat quarters" they sell at the fabric store that way it doesn't cost alot of $$$ for big cuts you dont need.
I think that might be the cutest thing I've ever seen!
WOW! I am in AWE! So cute! I made your car caddy last year, but I'm not sure I have this one in me :) I'll have to keep in in mind though - awesome inspiration! Thank you for sharing, as usual!
This is the cutest playmat ever! I am making one for my son for Christmas and wanted it personalized. Thanks for sharing, I will be referring to your craftiness alot the next two months.
Honestly...AWESOME!!!
any chance you will give us some patterns? this is amazing! I love your stuff. I have made your felt play house and appreciate all your great ideas! I would love some help with this one. too cute!

Wow you are amazing!! I your blog had been around 12 years ago! :)

Hi Jill,
Love your work and LOVE this car mat! I am working on one, not quite to your standards, but one nonetheless! I was thinking of using a flannel for the car mat base fabric. What did you use? I know you painted it I don't know that flannel would tolerate the paint? Suggestions?
THanks!
Your loyal follower,
jess

This is absolutely amazing. I envy your talent!
That is GREAT!!! I am going to attempt something similar!!!
This is amazing. What type of fabric did you use for this project?
Thanks,Jay
Astounding!! If only I had a little boy ... !!
Just found you via a pin on pinterest and i'm very impressed. I would also like to know what fabric the (green) base is? Did you just use curtain/upholstery plain fabric? And how does it wash?!
I really want to make one now. A close friend is having a very VERY long awaited baby who will be a wonderful miracle and I think its a boy ... if it is i'm going to start planning!

This is absolutely amazing - very impressed!
WOW, absolutely fabulous!
I love your blog and find your projects so inspiring! (In fact, reading your blog is what got me started sewing). I just made a take along car playmat inspired by this one for my son's second birthday. It's not nearly as fabulous hehe, a lot smaller, and closes up like a drawstring bag to hold the cars and so it's portable. You can see where I posted about it here: http://nennaandbarley.blogspot.com/2012/03/playmat-remix-car-playmat-tutorial-sort.html Keep the great projects coming, you're so inspiring!
OMG... My grandson just asked me today if I could make him one.... is your pattern available?????
Some things in here I have not thought about before. Thanks for making such a cool post which is really very well written.will be referring a lot of friends about this.
Thanks for the inspiration, I want to make one for my daughter that fits the coffee table, but I made a floor version for a friends bday. I looked at a few links I'd pinned and you yours was one I kept coming back to. Here's the link to the one I made

I have been wanting to do this for my grandsons, as I had made one for my son when he was a little guy. What I don't remember is what size I made it. What do you think is a good size? My son took his everywhere we went. I made him a bag to carry it in along with a few cars tucked in side he was ready to go.
I suggest this site to my friends so it could be useful & informative for them also. Great effort.
