would you like to sew along with me?

I started my felt Christmas project last night.   Any guesses to what I'm making?

An advent calendar!  I've always wanted one, and I think Oscar will get really into it this year.  Last year I saw this advent calendar at inchmark journal and fell in l.o.v.e.  Isn't it beautiful?  I am going to make a very similar advent calendar, and it would be so fun to have you join me!

Here's the plan:  there are exactly four weeks until December first.  Each week I am going to do one post with an update and assignment.  I'll even offer an ornament template here and there.  You can join me in copying Inchmark's advent calendar, or come up with one all your own.  Submit your photos to the Homemade by You flickr group, and I'll showcase calendar ideas all along the way.

Want to join the fun?  Here is this week's assignment:
  • Cut your main backing piece (I am cutting mine to 20x30 inches)
  • Cut your felt pockets and embroider them with numbers 1-24 (my pockets are cut 2 1/2 inches square).  I am using a tight chain stitch to embroider my numbers.
  • Sew the pockets to the backing piece
UPDATE:  Many of you have asked what kind of felt I'm using.  I love Rainbow Classic felt, which is made of 100% eco-fi (polyester made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles).  It is a good thickness, comes in gorgeous colors, and very economical - hence, my favorite non-wool felt.  You can buy it in yardage at fabric.com, among other places.

I'm thinking about making an Advent Calendar this year as well. I made one from the Sew Mama Sew tutorial last year. I love it, but the pockets are a bit small for gifts for toddlers. I'm thinking about making one that is toddler friendly by modeling after an over the door shoe bag. I'm excited to see yours!

Oh Yeah. I have been thinking about making one. I need to go pick up some felt. Guess I have something to do tomorrow while the kids are at school.

What kind of felt do you use for a project like this? Just the stuff that you get at joannes or Micheals? If I really did this I would want it to last.

cool...i was thinking about doing one, but this would make it easy. :D all i have to do is do something each week.

I think I am going to make one of these with felt, but I want mine to be a nativity with the last day being the baby Jesus. I really like the tree idea though...

I won't be joining in but I wanted to share the felt advent calendar I made last year. The Purl Bee had a great tutorial, mine is sort of a combination of that and the one you linked to, and modeled after one my mom made when I was little. Looking forward to seeing what you and your readers come up with! I really enjoy your projects and tutorials http://www.stitchcraftcreations.com/2009/11/23/adventures-in-advent-calendars/

What a great idea! My kids would really love this and I can see it becoming a treasured part of their childhood. If I can make it to the fabric store, I am in!

... and I think I will steal Jessica's idea and make mine a Nativity. Perfect, Jessica!!

Hmmm.... I think I'm going to do this! I wanted to do a felt advent calendar anyway. I like not basing it on gifts or chocolate. :)

It is funny but I started mine last week. Have been wanting to do one for years and never got around to it. Now I will have a way to keep on track. Thanks for the motivation!

Like previous poster Jessica said, I like the Nativity idea. I currently have my mom's homemade felt advent calendar circa 1980. But it's a pretty basic Nativity with each figure just a silhouette.

Thanks for the inspiration and motivation. It's high time I made one of my very own!

I LOVE this idea! I've seen those calenders around and never even thought to make my own. I am so in! I have tons of felt waiting to be used. I think the tree is really cute but I like the idea of a nativity as well.
I can't wait to get started. I think I'll start cutting once my daughter goes to bed. Thanks for inviting others to join in on the fun. I can't wait!

Wow! I wanted to make an advent calendar with my daughter this year. The one we were planning to make is very similar to this one. I think we just might be sewing along. Though I don't know how to embroider so I will probably stamp the numbers onto the felt or make felt numbers to stick on. So excited!

Oooh I am SO excited to craft along! This is a fab Advent calendar... And I like the fact that I'll have someone breaking it down into assignments for me! Lol.

Felt is my most favorite crafting medium because it's cheap, easy to work with and it doesn't fray... and it's cheap... Did I already mention that? ; )

I've been wanting to make one of these--I am totally joining you. When will you post your next weeks assignment? Am I going to need a sewing machine, or will it all be embroidery? I'm SO excited!!!

HECK YES Jill!! Advent calendars are my favorite and this one is SO perfect. I already have 3 (i'm really crazy about them!) but don't have one we can hang ornaments up so how can I not make one!! Plus I have like 1,000 pieces of felt I need to use up!!
Thanks Jill- I am so excited!!
(p.s. I have a question about your felt playhouse but I will probably just email you with it here soon...thanks-)

I am currently making an advent calendar for thanksgiving. do you care if i send in the pic?

I've been in LOVE with that calendar, it's just like one I had as a kid. But the ornaments are so intimidating to me. I think I'll just jump in and do it though!

    Emily said...

I would have loved to do this project with you! But... I already made a calendar similar to this a few years ago. I actually made it pre-kids as a gift for my husband. He was always talking about the one he had as a kid, so I made one for him. Now with kids, its a special tradition. I posted my pictures to you flickr group.. its a lot like the one you are making, only part of it is fabric. I really love all the different ornaments in your example though. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

Hi, Jill! I am a devoted fan of your blog and ideas. I have three boys 4 and under that I stay home with. I am FINALLY making your advent calendar for them and am having a ball! Two questions...did you fuse the tree on before you appliqued around it? I'm also wondering if you blanket stitched the tree and pockets on with your sewing machine or did you do it by hand? Thanks for the help!
