baby belle dress

We are heading to Disneyland this weekend, and since it is Ruby's first time, she demanded a special outfit.  While I've always expected that we'd reach the princess stage, I didn't think it would be as early as 8 months.

I kid.  Obviously Ruby doesn't know anything about princesses, and this is all about her mama getting a little giddy at the sewing machine.  But when I saw the Belle Dress Tutorial at Crafterhours last summer, I just couldn't resist.  Princess dress up clothes made out of knits?  Genius!  This pretty dress is just as comfy as all her other baby clothes.

Squeal!  Ok, just had to get that out of my system.  :)

Ruby is a crawler now, so this little dress only comes to about her knees (which only happens to up the cuteness factor about tenfold).  We'll save the floor length gowns for later.

Like I said, I used Crafterhour's dress tutorial as my guide, and the Sweet Little Dress pattern by Leila and Ben as my peasant dress starter.  I used two men's t-shirts and only materials I had on hand.

Now the wheels in my head are turning, because she might need a whole collection of baby princess dresses.  Too young?  Nah ... you're never too young for dress up.

Love it!! :) I bet it's adorable when she's crawling around in it.

that's what she said...

holy smokes that is cute!!!

too bad i only have boys. i don't think the equivalent BEAST costume would be as charming. ;)

It's so pretty!! I love it!

Every day you inspire me to dig out my sewing machine. Especially since many of your projects incorporate using the scrap fabric that I have on hand. I would never have thought of using my husbands old t-shirts to make a Belle dress!

Oh my gosh!! I was just telling my husband the other day that I need to craft a cutsie princess trunk for our two year old daughter and fashion some dress up clothes to fill it. This is definitely on my list!!

Adorable! Have fun @ Disneyland!!

I agree! You're never too young... or too old, for that matter, for dressing up!

The dress is darling... but I think we need to see it modeled. :)

Oh, this makes me wish I had a girl (I'm expecting my third boy in a couple months). This is SO cute!

This is so cute and comfy looking. I hate putting my baby in fancy dresses that are so uncomfortable and hard to deal with. Maybe I need to learn to sew with knits!

p.s. Were you thinking of the movie when you said "the wheels in my head are turning" (from Gaston's song)? That made me laugh. thanks for sharing!

Looks like you've got your sewing groove back in ten-fold. I am amazed what you have whipped up. Certainly you do a lot more sewing with two then I ever did.
It is an excellent idea to make dress up clothes out of knit fabrics. It's comfortable and will probably hold up better then the cheap material they use at the store. Not to mention ALOT more modest. Nice job! Sure to be the cutest princess.

I squeeled too when I saw this!! SO adorable! My two year old is just now starting to become interested in dress-up...I've been waiting!!! I too want to make her some great dress up pieces and fill a trunk. A word of advice: add some very ambiguous pieces such as large strips of fabric. They'll use their imagination and make it into a scarf, cloak, skirt, top, etc. =)

I admit, my jaw dropped and I did a little giggle, which sounded funny with my jaw on the floor. Killer cute.

when you put a bell dress up and then say, "Now the wheels in my head are turning." Well, music pops into my head :)
Now the wheels in my head have been turning
since I looked at that loony, old man.
See, I've promised myself I'd be married to belle
and right now I'm evolving a plan

This is so cute! We haven't gotten into the princesses around here yet, but we are going to Disney on Ice later this month. Maybe my daughter does need a princess dress.

This is SO amazing. And now that you have such an amazing Belle gown, you'll be so happy you don't have to spend $59 on the one they sell in Disney.

Have the best time!

I loved your (inadvertant?) nod to the movie with your "wheels in my head" part.

That is an awesome outfit.

This is A-DOR-A-BLE!!! I love that it is soft and cosy knit material and make with old t-shirts too. :) My daughter needs one in every color! I am quite new to sewing...if you had to rate the difficulty on this project, how would you rate it? Could a beginner do this? I am scared!!! Have a fabulous time at Disney! Thanks!

Oh so fun! Ruby is one lucky princess! Would love for you to do a post sometime on how you balance your sewing and family life. My son is the same age as Ruby. Up until now, I've been able to put him on a quilt to play while I sew, but once he discovers crawling, I know sewing will be out the window. Would love to know your tips!
