crocheted lion mane hat

What do you think of my new digs?   I decided the old blog could use a spruce and decided to get professional help this time.  Kate from Smitten Blog Designs took excellent care of me and I am thrilled with the new look.  Thanks, Kate!

Last night as it was all being installed, I was poking around with things, reorganizing some labels, and editing my archives.  When I first started blogging (all the way back in 2006), I had no idea how to operate a sewing machine.   Instead, I was an avid crocheter.  In fact, my very first post ever was a crocheted bear hat.

I made a lot of animal hats that winter, but only kept one, which I realized is the perfect size for Oscar now.

This lion hat is kind of funny looking, but I love it.  As with all of my animal hats, I just made it up as I went along, so unfortunately there is no pattern to share.  But I will try to explain how I made the curly mane.

Single crochet tends to curl into itself, so I did fingers of single crochet off of a chain stitch.   Basically, you chain stitch however long you want the piece to be, then single crochet a long finger, turn and single crochet back the other direction toward your chain stitches.  Move to the next chain and do it again (repeat, repeat).  The single crochet strands will curl into twisty spirals.  I hope that makes sense to you if you are a crocheter.  There is a reason I've never tried to write down my crochet patterns!  :)

Check out my past posts to see my bear, frog, puppy, hippo, fish, pig, blue tiger (ha!), and monkey hats (but beware of the icky photography).

So cute! I like the other ones too. I think the hippo is my favorite as well.

I'm making burp clothes today...which was what my first post ever was about back in 2009...and I'll just say my photography has come a long way since then too. :)

WOW!! What a change! Very swank.

Love the lion hat!! I made an owl hat for my little guy this winter and I received so many compliments. No one can resist a youngster in an animal hat :)

I like the new look! Thank you for this post - I can't sew, but would love to learn. I thought for sure you've been sewing since you were a wee one, but to find out that you've only been sewing for a handful of years, and to see that you make such beautiful creations...it gives me hope that I can learn too! I have been following your blog for the last couple of years and it is such a nice place to visit. It's like having a cup of tea. :)

Would you please let us know how you learned to sew? Did you take lessons? Did you fiddle around with a sewing machine on your own? Any tips would be much appreciated. :)

I don't want to sound critical because I love your site, but when looking at your blog on a screen with higher resolution (anything wider than 1350 pixels) the center column starts moving weirdly to the left of the screen. Also many of the fonts look tiny compared to the font size of your ads. I'm just telling you to be helpful since you asked for feedback! Please know that you have been an inspiration to me for years and that I thoroughly enjoy your blog.

I usually read in reader, but stopped by to search for something. I love your new look. I'm going through a blog identity crisis myself. Hope I can figure something out so it can be cute like yours!

New look is awesome. Love it. So clean and simple. Love!

I love the new look as well, so clean and pretty. I agree with Meredith above, though--the ad right on top is really big and distracting when you first get to the site. I'd remove that if I could, it just pulls my attention right to it, when I just want to focus on your site.

That said, I, too, am a long time reader and fan. Thanks for everything you put on here for us to enjoy. :)

Loooooove the new revamp! FAbulous!!! Did you ever get my email about next month? Some people had it go into spam for some reason so that's why I'm double checking here in the comment section like an annoying person...haha.

I love the new layout. I've been a (silent) follower for a while, but now that I've started a craft blog too, I've pledged to leave more comments.

P.S. I found you years ago after my cousin-in-law, Katie Evans, recommended I check out your blog. The world is small, right?

Um, seriously? You had no idea how to operate a sewing machine? So, for someone like me who owns a sewing machine but has no idea how to use it, what advice would you give? How did you figure it all out? You've just got the crafty gene in you!
