stegosaurus hoodie

My next project for the Kids Clothes Week Challenge was to make a stegosaurus hoodie for Oscar.  It has been far too long since I have sewn something for my little guy.

I used the Urban Unisex Hoodie pattern by Heidi & Finn.  To change it up a little bit, I added stegosaurus plates up the back and hood (not terribly creative, I know, but Oscar is a dinosaur fanatic).  The only modification to the pattern was to split the back piece in half and a small seam allowance for sewing it back together.

I drafted the stegosaurus plates myself.  They are two layers of jersey fabric with fusible fleece interfacing in between.  Truth be told, I would make the plates much smaller if I were to do this again.  But Oscar thinks it is great, and that's what matters, right?

You might think a hoodie is a strange project so close to summer, but you kind of need a jacket in the evenings year-round in Santa Barbara.  Since this is slightly large on him, it should get a lot of use.

For the outer fabric, I used an incredibly soft XL men's t-shirt that I found at a thrift store.  The polka dot lining is Michael Miller's Interlock Knit Ta Dot in aqua.

Hooray for dinosaurs, and hooray for little boys who still get excited about the things their mamas sew for them.

Jill this is fantastic! I love that pattern, and have made it 77573892 times. This is a great way to change it up a little, so don't surprised if I totally rip off this idea. And oscar is adorable, as always!

What a fantastic idea! How did you find working with that Heidi and Finn pattern? I just tried the Yoga Hoodie. (blogged here: http://aimeeledwell.com/?p=694 ) It came out great, but I wasn't crazy about the pdf layout and instructions. I'm reluctant to buy another one, even though I love the style of the garments.

Thanks, everyone!

Aimee - I read through your blog post and I don't think I had the same problems you had with the yoga hoodie pattern. For one, the pattern pieces did not overlap, so I only had to print them out once.

As for the clarity of instructions, I rarely read them anyway, unless I don't understand where a pattern piece goes. I did sew a seam from the instructions that I later found unnecessary (at the bottom of the main pieces, before adding the band at the waist), but I was using a serger, so perhaps with a regular sewing machine it would make more sense.

Overall, I would say it is a good pattern! I think you could easily modify the Yoga Hoodie pattern to look like this one though.

What a fantastic idea. The hoodie pattern is on my to buy list. I will have to try and think if there is something similar I could do for my daughter. Perhaps just pink steggy plates :)

Hey Jill! This is Alicia from LCAT. =) That honestly looks profressional and I LOVE that hoodie! Maybe I'll do that for my boys in the fall. I love that Michael Miller fabric, too.

Oh, and your Chevron tote bag inspired me to use Chevron fabric for another project I'm working on - love it! Thanks for the idea.

I did something similar for a stegosaurus Halloween costume for my baby last year. I made a fleece hoodie by tracing an existing one, and sewed stiff felt plates in the seam up the back.

LOVE this! Great fabric choices and I love how you are accurate on the appearance of the stegosaurus plates. I linked back to you on my blog, because, while I did mine completely different...no sewing involved, your project was my inspiration. Wish I came with your sewing talents =] http://justafriddlebit.blogspot.com/2011/10/dinosaur-hoodie.html
