pumpkin gooey butter cake

Happy September!  While this month doesn't spell fall weather for Santa Barbara, I've got that autumn bug ... especially when it comes to food.   Bring on the pumpkin!

Gooey Butter Cake is a buttery, cream-cheesy cake that is traditionally baked in St. Louis, where I grew up.   You'll find it at any well-stocked picnic or pot luck event.  While on Pinterest the other day, I saw someone had made a pumpkin variety - be still my heart.  I had to try it out.   The recipe is the same as the traditional style, with a can of pumpkin and spices added.

Gooey Butter Cake (my friend Megan's recipe)

Crust:
1 Yellow Cake Mix
1 Egg
1 stick of butter, melted

Mix with fork, and press in bottom of 9x13 pan.

Top:
1 pound powdered sugar (4 cups)
1 package cream cheese, softened (8 oz)
1 stick of butter, very soft or melted
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla

Mix and pour over base.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40-50 minutes, or until set.  The center should still be slightly gooey.

Cool and serve topped with powdered sugar.  Delicious!  But not diet friendly.  :)

To make the pumpkin version, add one 15 ounce can of pureed pumpkin (plain pumpkin, not canned pumpkin pie), 1 tsp cinnamon, and 1 tsp nutmeg.

Glad to read I am not alone with the pumpkin thing. So far I have made itty bitty pumpkin pie bites, pumpkin cheesecake loaves, and home made pumpkin spice syrup for lattes. I will be adding this recipe to the list, it looks delicious!

Oh darn, I was hoping it would be gluten free! At least the filling is! What sort of texture is the crust when it's baked?

Would a typical (gluten free) cheesecake type crust work?

Are you kidding me?? HOW HAVE I NOT EVER HEARD OF GOOEY BUTTER CAKE?????!!! AND!!! AND THEN YOU ADD PUMPKIN TO IT??!?!?

MUST MAKE NOW!

Ok, not now, it's after midnight, but be still my heart, that looks SO GOOD!! It doesn't help that I am currently being visited by "Aunt Flo" and craving all things sweet. Hello! I do think I'll be making this tomorrow. Thanks for sharing and sorry about yelling! :o)

@Urban Blonde The base is more cake like than cheesecake like. If you can get a gluten free cake mix I would use that.

There are so many varieties of gooey butter cake. Google Paula Deen's gooey butter cake - she has a lemon version, peanut butter, chocolate etc. It's all based off this same recipe.

I didn't know this was a St. Louis thing ... makes sense that they are popular in my family since my grandparents grew up about an hour outside the city. Now I must look in the pantry for the ingredients ...

This is one of my favorite recipes! I use a spice cake mix in lieu of the yellow cake mix for the base. It really says "autumn" full force!

I made this the other day and it was an instant hit with the family-- even for my husband who normally doesn't care for baked goods (he's a chocolate candy man). Looking forward to trying this with pumpkin soon! Thanks for sharing the recipe! :o)

I would love to try this but I do not know what yellow cake mix is (I am from Germany). Is there an alternative?

I think someone said it above but this is actually Paula Deens recipe - the one that put her on the map and made her famous in fact - Not Megan's- Ha Ha. You probably should give the correct credit on your blog.

It is good though and one I love.

I have no doubt that Paula Deen makes an amazing gooey butter cake, but I doubt she was the person to invent it. My friend Megan didn't invent it either, but this is the recipe I got from her many years ago, so that's why I credit her. :)
