This week I've kept busy sewing birthday presents for Oscar's friends. He is in a playgroup with kids that have birthdays all within about a month and a half of each other. It is wonderful, but makes for an extremely busy birthday party season!
Oscar has two little friends who are especially adventurous and love the outdoors. I knew the Explorer Vest from the book Oliver + S: Little Things to Sew would be just perfect for them.
I made the first (khaki colored) vest with the simpler flat pockets, but couldn't resist adding the pocket bellows the second time around. I used the lining fabric, so the bellows would really stand out. It was fun to add bright touches in hidden places, too. Hello, colorful pocket flaps! Sewing for boys does not have to be boring.
I think my favorite part is the giant back pocket. Not sure how easily a toddler will get his treasures back there, but I'm sure it will be entertaining to watch him try. :)
Oscar keeps asking when I'll make him an explorer vest (he wants the accompanying bug-catcher box), so I'm sure you'll see more versions in the future!

The explorer vests are just adorable. Any little boy would love to have one. I might have to make one for my grandson when he gets just a bit older! Thanks for sharing your talent.
Adorable! You are an impeccable seamstress. Seriously.
What toddler wouldn't love that? Mine would love the pockets... I'll bet the other moms will treasure/hold on to these handmade vests.
Oh. My. Gosh. That is the cutest thing ever. I can just see a little toddler packing that back pocket crammed full and then putting it on to go off exploring. Priceless.
Custest "boy" item ever! Actually, I think my girls would like it also. I have Little Things to Sew on my Amazon wish list... maybe I'll have a stack of projects to do after Christmas!
I've been eying that pattern. Love the orange pocket flap! Great detail!
I love how the pockets look on the blue vest. I've been thinking of using the pattern for Christmas gifts for my nephews...I'll definitely be doing the bellow pockets.
*gasp* absolutely ADORABLE! my son would love one of those!
ADORABLE Jill!! You are super talented!!
I've had this book on my wish list since the first time you posted a project from it and with each new project you do I find myself wanting it more and more! These vests are so cute; I have 3 nephews and lots of friends with little boys that would LOVE to have one of these vests.
Was just looking at zulily.com and saw a very cute explorer set that would go great with the vest!
Both vests are so cute and the second one is especially awesome. I am in the process of making the vest now with the simple pockets. And those flaps are killing me. I have to keep ripping them off and putting them back on. And I am no perfectionist. I just can't get it right. That is why I googled the vest. But now I am inspired to keep on going. Maybe if I conquer the simple pockets I can someday do the awesome fancy pockets like you did.
